An API other people use is a promise. Once someone depends on it, changing it carelessly means breaking their system.
Version it from day one
Put the version in the address, for example /v1/orders. When you need a breaking change, release v2 and give a clear migration window.
Documentation is part of the product
- Request and response examples that can be copied directly
- A list of error codes and what they mean
- Rate limits and how retries work
A small thing with a big impact
Error messages that explain what went wrong and how to fix it save your API users a lot of time, and reduce support tickets to your team.
